Coat Of Many Colors

Cherie’s “Coat of Many Colors” was inspired by the story Dolly Parton has cherished her whole life. As a young girl, Dolly’s mother pieced together a tattered patchwork coat using scraps of fabric, sewing it with love and telling her the biblical story of Joseph’s coat of many colors so that she would wear it proudly.

Even though the coat was made with devotion, Dolly was teased for it. Yet that coat became a symbol—of her mother’s love, of family, of identity, and of finding worth beyond what others say. Dolly later turned that childhood experience into the beloved song “Coat of Many Colors,” transforming it into an anti-bullying anthem that became a cornerstone of her career and even inspired a movie.

Cherie has always been moved by that legacy. While searching for new quilts she came across this gem and its many colors reminded her of Dolly’s story—the resilience, the love stitched into every piece, and the message of being unashamed of what you wear and who you are. Her version of the coat pays tribute to that spirit: a celebration of individuality, family, and the beauty that comes from turning scraps into something meaningful.
